Due to restrictions on materials and transportation during the pandemic, some family began growing food in their backyard. During those uncertain days, it became a time to notice where food comes from and reflect on the relationship between people and the land. It was within this context that, in 2024, we founded Promise of Seeds.
Vancouver has great conditions for plant growth, making it suitable for urban agriculture. The city’s initiatives, like the Vancouver Community Garden Network, support thousands of residents who grow produce together in shared spaces. These urban gardens offer homegrown food whilst being hubs for people to connect.
After volunteering at the UBC Garden and Farm, we gained more knowledge about vegetable cultivation and experienced the collaborative spirit of urban farming. These moments sparked our growing interest in sustainable living within the community.
Our exploration began with identifying native seeds and vegetables that could thrive in our environment. Along the way, we investigated creative ways to combine recyclable materials with seeds to create meaningful, engaging items, encouraging more people to connect with the project.
Paper is one of the most common recyclable materials, yet so much gets discarded after just one use. We plan to create products by combining recycled paper with seeds.
We began collecting materials for our project from community gardens, grocery stores, and local businesses. We started organizing various activities and workshops to create plantable items that bring new life.
We aim to protect the environment, promote sustainable living, and strengthen community connections through simple everyday actions.
